Ecuador appeared to have the first goal of the 2022 FIFA World Cup when Enner Valencia punched in the score at 2:38, but it was ruled offside after a VAR check.

After Qatar goalkeeper Saad Abdullah Al Sheeb was yellow-carded, Valencia knocked in the penalty kick, giving Ecuador a 1-0 lead at 15:47.
