Court documents detail events in the shooting on the UNM campus


A University of New Mexico student is dead and an athlete from New Mexico State University is recovering after both were shot during an altercation at the University of New Mexico campus on Saturday morning. Newly filed court documents say Brandon Travis, Jonathan Smith, and a third person got into a fight at a previous UNM vs. NMSU game in Las Cruces. During that fight, Smith stated in court documents, that the group was “jumped,” and that NMSU Basketball player Michael Peake was involved in that fight. The third person in the group has not been charged with a crime and is not being identified.In court documents, Smith said that Travis and the third person had “talked about getting revenge.” That’s when a 17-year-old female said she was talking to Peake. Court documents say Travis, Smith, the 17-year-old female, and the third person conspired to lure Peake to the UNM campus and assault him.Documents say that when Peake met the 17-year-old female at the UNM campus on Saturday, that’s when Travis, Smith and the third person confronted Peake. During that altercation, one of the individuals hit Peake in the leg with a baseball bat and Travis pointed a gun a Peake. Peake then ran away and, court documents say, Peake and Travis began firing guns at each other. Smith and the third person ran away shortly after the shooting. They went to a dorm room, changed clothes, and tossed the clothes they were wearing during the altercation into the sewer. New Mexico State Police say Travis died at the scene of the shooting and Peake was transported to the hospital. State police say the 17-year-old female was arrested and say she has been booked into the juvenile detention center and is charged with aggravated battery and conspiracy. Smith has been arrested and charged with aggravated battery, conspiracy to commit aggravated battery and two counts of tampering with evidence.
